Joe Rogers, a cousin of George Rogers Clark, had been captured by the Shawnees on Christmas day 1776 while retrieving powder for the beleaguered settlers at Fort Harrod and Fort Boonesborough. He was living at Peckuwe when the battle started. Hearing the advance of his own people, he played dead until all of the Shawnee had fled the fort.

Running toward the troops shouting ``I'm a Virginian, I'm white!" he did not realize how altered  his appearance had become in living three years with the Shawnee. To Clark's men he appeared as just another Shawnee and they shot  without realizing who he was or what he was shouting.
