In April The Civil War Artillery Association held it’s safety qualification on a private farm near Springfield, KY. The CWAA began these training sessions in 1994 after many of their members participated in the filming of the movie Gettysburg.
“When re-enactor crews of various units came together for the filming we first realized that there were no standardized procedures for these cannons,” said instructor Keith Karcher. The move was made to have all crews follow the same procedures - and School of the Piece began.
This year the Civil War Units were joined by members of The Revolutionary War unit from The Painted Stone Settlers. Instructors explained the differences and the similarities in the two types of cannon.
In all of these training sessions members are encouraged to rotate through every position on the crew
