The Civil War Fort at Boonesboro is the remains of an earthenworks bastion overlooking the Kentucky River. The fortification was built by Union Soldiers to defend the ford and ferry at Boonesboro in 1863. This years event featured the 12th US Colored Heavy Artillery Regiment cannon crew giving demonstrations on the hour. Other exhibits were a field hospital manned by Kevin Palmer and a group of Topographical Engineers from Richmond, Kentucky.
The fort is accessed by a steep scenic trail that overlooks the Kentucky River. The entrance parking lot has a series of murals painted by local artist, Phil May. On event days such as this a shuttle bus brings folks to the trail from a nearby parking lot. In that parking lot this year was The History Mobile from The Kentucky Historical Society. The current event on board the History Mobile is a Civil War exhibit.
