Storms Cause Power Outages, Downed Trees At Cumberland Falls State Resort Park
CORBIN, Ky. – A tornado and thunderstorms caused damage at Cumberland Falls State Resort Park on Sunday, leading to power outages and some property damage but no injuries, the Department of Parks reported.
The park’s gift shop, a snack shop, and trails were closed today and the park restaurant is serving meals on a limited basis, Park Manager Lisa Davis said. The main road through the park, Kentucky 90, was open to traffic.
The storm caused trees to fall on some cottages but did not cause serious damage. The cottages are not being used because of power and phone outages, but the lodge and campground are open for business. The heaviest damage was to the park manager’s house at the park, located in Whitley and McCreary counties.
Many emergency crews and volunteers responded Sunday to begin the clean up work, Davis said. “We really appreciate all the people who came out on Sunday and today to begin helping us,” she said.
Anyone wanting to make or check on reservations should call the park at 800-325-0063. The park phone has been working on an intermittent basis.
The National Weather Service reported that winds of about 100 mph were reported Sunday morning.
